In a series of high-level diplomatic engagements across Central and East Africa, Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé has intensified discussions on regional cooperation and stability. Among the key meetings, Gnassingbé attended the inauguration ceremony of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who secured re-election in May 2026 in Kampala.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, the two leaders engaged in bilateral talks focusing on pressing security challenges in the Great Lakes region, particularly the ongoing instability in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to official statements, Lomé and Kampala are committed to continuous dialogue to advance peace initiatives and regional security.

Togo strengthens regional ties

The day before, President Gnassingbé visited Oyo in Republic of the Congo, where he met with Congolese counterpart Denis Sassou N’Guesso. During the working session, the leaders explored avenues to deepen bilateral cooperation and address shared economic priorities.

Among the outcomes of their discussions was the review of progress on the 2020 agreements between Port Autonome de Lomé and Port Autonome de Pointe-Noire. These ports are seen as vital trade gateways connecting Central and West Africa, facilitating smoother movement of goods and fostering economic integration.

Beyond trade and infrastructure, the leaders also addressed broader continental challenges, including political and security issues. As an active mediator for the African Union in the crisis in eastern DR Congo, President Gnassingbé continues to champion sustainable solutions and stronger African unity.
