Local eyewitnesses confirmed that Boko Haram militants launched a predawn offensive against a Nigerien defense and security forces position west of N’Guigmi, a garrison town bordering Lake Chad. The attack unfolded in the early hours of Friday, leaving a devastating toll on military personnel. N’Guigmi’s position as a crossroads between Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad makes it a critical security hotspot in the region.

Casualty reports and ongoing operations

A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, reported: “At least ten soldiers were killed in Friday’s Boko Haram attack near N’Guigmi. There were also fatalities among the attackers, and the army has launched clearance operations in the area.”

Social media posts from N’Guigmi residents suggested a higher death toll, claiming “ten military personnel and four national guard members lost their lives in the assault.”

The Nigerien News Agency (ANP) confirmed fatalities without providing specific numbers, stating that “military personnel perished following an attack by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.” Regional governor General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma attended the soldiers’ burials shortly after the incident.
