Dangote expands investment in Cameroon with new oil sector plans
After establishing a strong presence in the cement industry, Dangote Group is now in advanced negotiations to make significant investments in Cameroon’s oil sector, focusing on storage and transportation infrastructure.
Expanding cement production while eyeing oil infrastructure
During a high-level meeting in Yaoundé between Cameroonian Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and Dangote Group executives, the Nigerian conglomerate confirmed its intentions to invest in Cameroon’s petroleum industry. This follows the group’s existing operations in the country’s cement sector, where it plans to double production capacity at its Douala facility.
Devakumar Edwin, Dangote Group’s Vice President for Oil and Gas, presented the company’s vision for Cameroon’s energy future. “The group aims to develop storage and transportation solutions for petroleum products to meet the growing national demand for reliable energy infrastructure”, he explained during the discussions.
Strategic partnerships for energy independence
Cameroon’s oil refining sector is undergoing significant transformation. The National Refining Company (Sonara), which has been operating at reduced capacity since a devastating fire in 2019, faces both challenges and opportunities with Dangote’s potential entry into the market.
Government officials see this collaboration as essential for short-term market stability while maintaining long-term plans for Sonara’s reconstruction. The ambitious 700 billion FCFA project aims to restore the refinery’s full operational capacity, ensuring Cameroon’s energy independence in the coming years.
Key points of the partnership:
- Immediate benefits: Enhanced petroleum product storage and distribution networks
- Long-term vision: Complete rehabilitation of Sonara’s refining capabilities
- Economic impact: Creation of new jobs and stimulation of related industries
A growing presence in Central Africa’s largest economy
The Dangote Group’s expanding investments in Cameroon reflect the country’s strategic importance in Central Africa. With operations spanning multiple industries, the conglomerate is positioning itself as a key player in the region’s economic development while supporting Cameroon’s infrastructure modernization efforts.
