The Côte d’Ivoire is taking a decisive step toward enhancing its educational framework by prioritizing the integration of national languages. A three-day workshop, held from July 10 to 12, 2026, in Grand-Bassam, brought together educators, experts, and development partners to refine the draft National Language Education Policy.

Under the leadership of N’Guessan Koffi, Minister of National Education, Literacy, and Technical Training, the event served as a platform for presenting field research findings and validating initial policy drafts. The goal is to create a robust reference framework that aligns with the country’s linguistic diversity while improving teaching quality and accessibility.

Strengthening the role of national languages in learning

During the opening ceremony, Mah Louhan Mamadou, Director of Adult Literacy and Non-Formal Education, highlighted the critical importance of national languages as both a cultural asset and an educational tool. He emphasized that these languages are essential for preserving Côte d’Ivoire‘s heritage while making education more inclusive and effective for students across the country.

“Our linguistic richness is not just a cultural treasure; it is a foundation for better learning outcomes,” Mah Louhan Mamadou stated. He praised the government’s commitment to this initiative, noting that it reflects a broader vision for equitable and quality education.

Policy recommendations focus on inclusivity and accessibility

Diomandé Mabintou Cherif, General Inspector and Secretary-General of the Inspectorate, represented the Minister and underscored the urgency of adapting educational policies to local realities. She pointed out that rapid economic, social, and technological changes demand flexible and responsive education systems—systems that must be rooted in the linguistic and cultural contexts of learners.

“Languages are powerful tools for breaking down barriers to learning,” she remarked, adding that integrating national languages will make education more relevant and accessible to students from diverse backgrounds. She also acknowledged the vital role of technical and financial partners in supporting this transformation.

What’s next for the National Language Education Policy?

The workshop’s outcomes are expected to play a pivotal role in finalizing the policy document, which will guide the adoption and integration of national languages in Côte d’Ivoire‘s education system. The long-term vision is to create an inclusive, high-quality learning environment that leverages local languages to boost academic success and preserve cultural identity.

With this initiative, Côte d’Ivoire is positioning itself at the forefront of educational innovation in West Africa, demonstrating how language can be a catalyst for both social cohesion and economic progress.
