Chad’s energy landscape is set for a transformative upgrade with the advancement of a groundbreaking 40 MW power plant project in N’Djamena, driven by a strategic collaboration with Algeria’s Sonelgaz. A high-level delegation, led by Sonelgaz International CEO Yazid Djellouli, recently visited the Chadian capital to finalize technical specifications and operational milestones alongside Tchad-Elec representatives.
The plant, designed with a tri-fuel technology, introduces a new level of operational adaptability. This innovative system can seamlessly switch between natural gas and liquid fuels, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply—a critical advantage for N’Djamena, where frequent power cuts and rising demand have long been persistent challenges. The flexibility to leverage both local and imported fuel sources guarantees energy security while optimizing production based on availability and cost efficiency.
The partnership extends beyond mere infrastructure development. Sonelgaz will play a pivotal role in knowledge transfer, equipping Chad’s National Electricity Company (SNE) with advanced maintenance and optimization techniques honed in Algeria’s complex energy networks. This South-South cooperation model is designed to empower Chadian professionals with technical autonomy, fostering long-term sustainability and reducing reliance on external expertise.
The project’s broader significance lies in its contribution to Chad’s economic sovereignty. By embracing versatile technologies and diversifying energy partnerships, the country aims to curtail its dependence on expensive fossil fuels while fortifying its national grid. This strategic energy expansion not only signals a positive shift for business confidence but also underscores electricity as a cornerstone for industrial growth and economic resilience in Chad.
