Chad opposition leader Succès Masra remains imprisoned after appeal rejected

Supreme Court decision seals Succès Masra’s fate

Chad’s highest judicial authority has rejected the appeal filed by Succès Masra, ensuring his continued detention. His legal team expressed disappointment following the ruling. « Despite presenting robust legal arguments, the Supreme Court upheld the original verdict, » stated lawyer Francis Kadjilembaye. Masra, arrested in May 2025, was sentenced in August of the same year to 20 years in prison on charges of « disseminating hateful and xenophobic messages » and « complicity in murder. »

Human rights groups condemn politically motivated trial

Human Rights Watch has labeled the proceedings against Masra as a « politically motivated trial, » highlighting the government’s intolerance toward dissent. Security measures were notably tightened around the Supreme Court in N’Djamena, with journalists reportedly denied access to the hearing. « This case exemplifies the authorities’ crackdown on opposition voices, » the organization emphasized.

Political climate remains volatile

The ruling arrives amid escalating political tensions in Chad. Earlier this month, eight opposition leaders were handed eight-year prison sentences, primarily for charges of insurrection. Authorities also dissolved the country’s main opposition coalition days before these convictions. Opposition parties have repeatedly denounced intimidation tactics and the prohibition of public gatherings. In late April, a member of Masra’s party, Les Transformateurs, was fatally shot by police during a protest demanding his release.

From opposition figure to Prime Minister

An economist trained in France and Cameroon, Succès Masra emerged as a leading critic of President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno before his unexpected appointment as Prime Minister in 2024. During the presidential election held that same year, Masra ran against the incumbent, who officially secured 61.3% of the vote compared to Masra’s 18.5%. Masra contested these results, alleging electoral fraud and claiming victory.
