Regional program to advance gender equality, climate resilience, and green economy in West Africa
Abidjan, 22 May 2026 – The ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (ECGD) has joined forces with UN Women and key ECOWAS agencies to unveil a pioneering regional initiative focused on gender integration, climate action, and green economy transition. The program was officially validated during a two-day workshop held in Abidjan on 15 and 16 May 2026.
The meeting brought together policymakers, gender specialists, and climate experts to finalize the strategic framework of the program and establish a clear implementation roadmap. This initiative is designed to align with the urgent needs of ECOWAS member states in addressing gender disparities, climate vulnerability, and sustainable economic transformation.
Bridging policy with action
The initiative seeks to strengthen regional collaboration in three critical areas:
- Gender mainstreaming into climate policies and green economy strategies
- Climate resilience initiatives tailored to women and girls in West Africa
- Green economy transition that creates equitable opportunities for all
Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the ECGD, highlighted the dual nature of the green transition: “While it presents significant challenges, it also opens unprecedented opportunities for women and girls across West Africa to participate in and benefit from sustainable economic growth.”
Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, emphasized the program’s transformative potential: “This initiative marks a decisive shift from political rhetoric to tangible action in tackling the region’s most pressing climate and economic challenges.”
Dr Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, underscored the importance of inclusivity: “A successful green transition must be built on equitable access to opportunities, ensuring that no segment of society—especially women and youth—is left behind.”
Next steps and regional commitment
The finalized program document is set to be adopted during a high-level working session scheduled for 29 June to 6 July 2026 in Lomé, Togo. This gathering will bring together high-ranking officials from ECOWAS member states to review progress and solidify commitments to the initiative’s goals.
The program aligns with ECOWAS’s Gender and Climate Change Action Plan, reinforcing the bloc’s dedication to sustainable development and social equity across West Africa.
