Cameroon’s election timeline must be respected, says opposition leader Joshua Osih

The Social Democratic Front (SDF) leader has called for an immediate halt to any further delays in the electoral process, declaring that the election schedule belongs to the people, not the government.

«Elections must proceed as scheduled—no single day of delay. The election timeline is not the government’s to control; it belongs to the Cameroonian people. I urge all opposition parties, across all political divides, to unite behind this critical demand,» Osih emphasized during a press briefing on 23 July.

The opposition leader’s appeal comes in the wake of recent municipal and legislative elections postponements, after the government’s proposed timeline was approved by the National Assembly and formalized through a presidential decree in June 2026. The mandate extensions have now been pushed to February 2027.

Government cites financial, logistical, and security constraints

Officials have defended the delays by citing financial constraints, logistical challenges, and security concerns, alongside adjustments to the electoral calendar.
