Burkina Faso’s military regime cracks down on judicial corruption

The government led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso has announced the uncovering of an extensive “network of dishonest officials” operating within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal. These judicial officers, detained in October, face allegations of accepting payments to influence legal proceedings and deliver biased rulings.

Significant judicial dysfunction in Burkina Faso

Approximately ten senior judicial figures in Burkina Faso, including court presidents, a prosecutor general, and an investigating judge, are facing charges related to corruption. This information comes from an official statement released by the authorities.
These arrests, which occurred throughout October, were a direct result of investigations that “uncovered a sprawling network of unscrupulous personnel within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal,” as detailed by Captain Farouk Azaria Sorgho, the spokesperson for Korag. Korag is the body responsible for executing the military regime’s proclaimed “popular progressive revolution.”

Substantial financial implications

Captain Sorgho confirmed that “significant financial transactions were involved in acts of corruption and undue influence, leading to flawed investigations and biased judgments.” A specific case under scrutiny involves ten customs officers who were acquitted after charges were dropped. Korag has labeled this outcome a “judicial charade,” asserting that such decisions undermine the broader campaign against corruption.

Military regime pledges intensified anti-corruption efforts

Drawing inspiration from Thomas Sankara, Captain Traoré’s administration, which assumed power in 2022, has positioned the battle against corruption as a cornerstone of its agenda. Captain Sorgho declared, “We will intensify our efforts in the fight against corruption and ensure accountability for judicial personnel,” while also highlighting a “serious breakdown within the justice system.”
The military government, despite facing frequent accusations of suppressing dissent, aims to project an image of resolve against internal malpractices that could tarnish its public perception.
