The national landscaping initiative in Burkina Faso aims to overhaul the urban environment by developing 80 green zones, 60 roundabouts, and 65 kilometers of tree-lined streets. This ambitious strategy seeks to modernize the appearance and livability of cities across the country.
In urban centers often plagued by dust and intense heat, these new developments—such as the green space near the Ouaga 2000 interchange—offer much-needed areas for relaxation and ecological relief.
A breath of fresh air for citizens and the diaspora
Dr Ines Bationo, a member of the Burkinabè diaspora currently visiting from Sénégal, expressed her delight: “I was truly captivated by these new spaces upon my arrival. Seeing such transformations brings immense joy.“
Local community leader Mahamadi Ouedraogo emphasized the environmental shift, noting that where there was once only red earth and dust, a refreshing microclimate is now emerging. He stressed the importance of ecological awareness in the face of the Sahel‘s rising temperatures.
Scientific benefits of urban vegetation
Research indicates that integrating nature into city planning is a powerful tool against rising temperatures. By adding trees, green roofs, and parks, urban centers can see a reduction in average temperatures of approximately 2°C. Furthermore, areas under tree cover can experience maximum temperatures up to 4°C lower than exposed urban zones, significantly improving public health during heatwaves.
Beyond the climate impact, these projects foster social cohesion and civic pride, turning once-barren areas into communal hubs for meeting and resting.
Ensuring long-term sustainability
The project’s ultimate success hinges on the maintenance of these newly planted areas. Lassané Sawadogo, a civil society representative, suggests that establishing clear access protocols could help the Ministry of the Environment and local municipalities generate the revenue needed for upkeep.
For visitors like Sidoine Nakanabo, these spaces are essential for relaxation and have the potential to boost local tourism. Through this initiative, Burkina Faso is redefining the modern city as a place where infrastructure and nature coexist to provide a better quality of life for all.
