Burkina Faso secures world bank funding to boost health system resilience

The World Bank has recently approved a €142 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA) alongside a $17 million grant from the Global Financing Facility (GFF) to fund the Health System Performance and Resilience Enhancement Project (HSPREP) in Burkina Faso.

This initiative is specifically designed to strengthen health surveillance, improve service delivery, and enhance nutrition programs, with a strong focus on adolescents, women, and children under five. The project will be implemented nationwide, with special attention given to internally displaced persons and underserved communities facing limited healthcare access.

«Human development is the cornerstone of social inclusion and remains a top priority for the World Bank. This project aligns with the government’s efforts to build resilience and address current health sector challenges. It complements the recently approved Human Capital Protection Project, which received $100.4 million to enhance the delivery of essential social services,» stated Hamoud Abdel Wedoud Kamil, World Bank Resident Representative in Burkina Faso.

The HSPREP is fully aligned with the World Bank’s West and Central Africa regional strategy, which aims to reinforce the social contract by strengthening core institutions responsible for providing basic social services.

«Ensuring access to healthcare for women, adolescents, and children is one of the most impactful investments governments can make to drive national development and prosperity. The GFF is proud to support Burkina Faso in building a robust and resilient health system that delivers quality care to these key demographics, even in the most vulnerable areas,» emphasized Luc Laviolette, Head of the GFF Secretariat.

«This timely initiative will bolster Burkina Faso’s capacity to prepare for and respond to health emergencies while improving the quality and utilization of health and nutrition services. It will also reinforce the World Bank’s ongoing support for the Ministry of Health’s reforms aimed at enhancing governance, equity, and sustainable financing within the health sector,» explained Moussa Dieng, Health Portfolio Manager at the World Bank.
