Benin approves contracts for 14 health centres and Ouidah maternity renovation
The Beninese government has taken a decisive step in its push to modernise public healthcare and narrow gaps in access to medical services. Meeting in Council of Ministers on Wednesday 7 October 2026, the executive gave the go-ahead for contracts with the selected firms, formally setting in motion the construction of fourteen health centres across the country, alongside a full rehabilitation of the maternity unit at the Ouidah zone hospital.
A denser health network for priority areas
The large-scale intervention is designed above all to bring health facilities closer to people living in rural and peri-urban areas. Beyond expanding capacity, the project provides for greater medical staffing and equipment at these facilities, raising the standard of care to meet required health norms.
Beneficiary localities and the Ouidah maternity upgrade
Among the communities set to benefit are Kpakpamè, Savalou-Aguah, Kountori, Adjohoun, Tchi-Ahomadégbé and Idigny. At the same time, the planned rehabilitation of the maternity unit at the Ouidah zone hospital is intended to provide a modernised, safe and decent setting for the monitoring of pregnant women and newborns.
Rigour and oversight in delivery
As part of the priority investments under the Government Action Programme (PAG), the initiative aims to durably transform the face of public health in Benin. To ensure deadlines and quality standards are met, the Council of Ministers instructed the relevant government members to maintain rigorous field monitoring throughout the construction works.
