The healthcare infrastructure in Benin has achieved a significant milestone in its development. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, formally accepted a delivery of 600 state-of-the-art oxygen concentrators. This new equipment is set to enhance the emergency care capacities of 23 medical facilities across the nation.
Advanced technology to safeguard patient lives
Acquired through UNICEF with the financial support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this procurement represents a total investment exceeding 205,450 USD, or approximately 116 million CFA francs. These “10LPM single flow” devices are engineered to deliver a steady and life-saving supply of oxygen to individuals experiencing acute respiratory distress.
This large-scale distribution is primarily directed toward 23 hospitals and health centers situated within the departments of Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.
A vital tool in reducing maternal and child mortality
According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this equipment delivery is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a core component of a national strategy aimed at lowering maternal, neonatal, and infant mortality rates.
“The availability of medical oxygen is a critical necessity. These devices serve as a concrete manifestation of our dedication to ensuring that every citizen, no matter where they are, has fair access to superior medical services,” the Minister declared during the official ceremony.
Dynamic international cooperation for public health
The event was attended by the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wei Zhang, and the UNICEF Resident Representative, Mr. Ousmane Niang. The Ambassador lauded the excellent diplomatic relations between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s intent to continue supporting the country’s health sector.
The UNICEF representative further noted that these units, funded by the generosity of individual donors in China, will significantly improve the resilience of the Beninese health system when facing life-threatening emergencies. This enhancement of operational capacity reinforces the government’s ongoing initiatives to modernize national medical facilities and provide a more effective public health service.
