Bénin and Niger advance toward border reopening with expert committee

Bénin and Niger have taken a decisive step to restore cross-border ties. Following a high-level working visit by Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni to Niamey on June 2, 2026, both nations announced the formation of a joint expert committee tasked with assessing conditions for reopening their shared border within the next 15 days.

The announcement came in a joint statement released after discussions between President Wadagni and his Nigerien counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani. The committee will evaluate existing challenges and recommend concrete measures to address them before a potential reopening.

Strengthening bilateral ties through shared priorities

The meeting highlighted a shared commitment to deepen cooperation across key areas, including regional security, economic integration, and sustainable development. Both leaders emphasized the long-standing historical and cultural bonds between their nations, reaffirming their dedication to fostering peace and prosperity for their people.

To sustain momentum, the presidents agreed to revitalize existing cooperation frameworks, including the regular convening of the Niger-Bénin Joint Cooperation Commission.

Security cooperation takes center stage

With persistent security threats plaguing the Sahel and West Africa, the two heads of state underscored the urgency of enhanced cross-border collaboration. They pledged to strengthen joint efforts against terrorism and transnational crime, which continue to undermine economic stability and social progress in the region.

Border closure nears resolution

The border issue was a focal point of the discussions. Closed in July 2023 amid regional tensions, the border has severely disrupted trade flows and the movement of people between the two countries. The establishment of the expert committee signals a clear political will to normalize relations and restore vital connections.

The committee’s findings, expected within two weeks, will guide both governments in determining the practical steps toward a phased reopening. The visit concluded with President Wadagni extending an official invitation to President Tiani to visit Bénin, further solidifying their shared vision for a renewed era of mutual trust and cooperation.
