Benin and Cuba seal breakthrough economic pact in Cotonou

In a decisive move that marks a major turning point, Benin and Cuba have committed to revitalizing their historic economic and diplomatic partnership. The breakthrough came during a high-level diplomatic meeting in Cotonou between Cuba’s ambassador, Denisse Amaro Salabarría, and leaders of the Benin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI Benin). Both nations reaffirmed their determination to actively boost trade and economic exchanges, setting the stage for a new era of cooperation.

A partnership rooted in shared history

The ties between Benin and Cuba rest on a long-standing friendship, built on deep cultural connections and consistent South-South solidarity. Institutionally, this economic momentum builds on a framework agreement signed in 2002 between the two chambers of commerce. Now, amid shifting global dynamics, Cotonou and Havana intend to modernize this bilateral axis and turn it into a concrete engine for growth.

Mutual sectoral opportunities

During the discussions, Cuban diplomats highlighted recent economic reforms on the Caribbean island, opening new doors for Beninese investors and entrepreneurs. Several priority sectors were identified for future partnerships:

  • Agro-industry and food production
  • Renewable energy
  • Tourism and cultural engineering
  • Biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry, where Cuba has globally recognized expertise.

To turn these ambitions into reality, Beninese companies have been invited to take part in the Havana International Fair (FIHAV), a major commercial hub for the Caribbean region.

Benin as a strategic hub for West Africa

For its part, the CCI Benin delegation emphasized the country’s geostrategic position as a key logistics and commercial platform in the West African sub-region. By showcasing the ongoing modernization of the Autonomous Port of Cotonou, the Beninese side invited Cuban economic operators to use Benin as a gateway to West African markets.

This meeting marks the starting point of a roadmap focused on regular follow-up of commitments made, sealing the effective revival of a historic partnership oriented toward the future.
