Bamako recently hosted a high-profile event marking the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, where officials from both nations highlighted the deepening economic and diplomatic ties between Mali and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Celebrating Strong Bilateral Relations
During the reception, Moroccan diplomats reviewed the progress of cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing the growing partnership in West Africa. Former Malian minister Thierno Amadou Omar Hass Diallo remarked on Morocco’s expanding influence in Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, noting that Mali’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara was a key milestone.
Shared Vision for Africa’s Future
Driss Isbayène, Morocco’s ambassador to Mali, underscored the strategic importance of South-South cooperation under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. He stated, “Our approach is built on solidarity, mutual respect, and tangible projects that directly benefit our people.” He also expressed optimism about the future, stating that 2026 would be remembered as a turning point in the relationship between the two nations.
Mali’s Recognition of Morocco’s Sovereignty
Isbayène highlighted Morocco’s historic decision by Mali to withdraw recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) in April, calling it a major step forward. This move paved the way for the recent meeting of the Mali-Morocco Joint High Commission, further solidifying economic and political collaboration.
Mali’s Commitment to Regional Stability
Abdoulaye Diop, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, praised Morocco’s support for the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). He stated that the anniversary was an opportunity to reaffirm Mali’s appreciation for Morocco’s role in promoting peace, security, and development across the region. Diop also commended the Royal Atlantic Initiative, designed to enhance Sahel countries’ access to the Atlantic Ocean.
